Chapter Twenty
âMama,â I fling my arms around her when she answers my knock on the door.
âK-Kenna?â
âYes, Mama. Remmington brought me. I donât have much time with you, but we need your help. Can I come in?â
She looks at me in confusion, but steps back to let me in, looking behind me for who I spoke of, but of course no one was there. A dragon appearing in the middle of the village would create quite the uproar, and that is not what we want right now.
âItâs just me, Mama. Remmington is one of the Dragon Lords and he is waiting outside the village for me. I have so much to tell you, it might only be a few days, but so much has happened. But are you alright? The little ones doing well? What about your husband and my sisters?â
Mama laughs, âSlow down, Kenna. Do you have time for a cup of tea?â
âYes, Mama.â I sit down at the table and look around the living space of her new home. It is larger than where we lived with Papa and is clean and well kept. The furnishings are on the nicer side. âHe treats you well.â
âNot that it really is your business, but yes he does. He is kind and treats the little ones well. He is a blacksmith and very much in demand. Your sisters married a set of brothers who have a farm, they seem like nice young men.â
She carries over the teapot and two cups to the table and sits down. âHow are you? Do the dragons treat you well? And why are you here? None of the chosen have ever come back.â
âThey are . . . different than I expected. They have challenged me and made me see things differently. The way they live, the way the women live is amazing. Everyone is equal. No one is hungry, or cold. Each person does a equal share of work, doing something they enjoy.â
She smiles at me, but something in her eyes bothers me. âIâm glad that youâre happy and safe there.â
âI am and I want that for all our people, especially for the women. The Dragon Lords want the same thing. There is a prophecy about them and we think it is also for the humans. But the Elders will never accept it, so we need your help. Will you help us Mama?â
She takes her time answering as she pours the tea. âKenna, what do you think needs to change?â
âMama! Canât you see? You, my sisters and aunts being forced to marry to have somewhere to live! Not having a say in our lives. The years we scraped by while Papa and the boys lived each day underground to find gems. The Elders being able to live in their houses, not having to work, while we rip our nails out just to grow enough food to not starve over the winter.â
âWill any of that really change?â She takes my hand and holds it. âWe will still need to eat, still need protection, need to be able to buy what we need.
